well you are not specific enough for many people to help. all engines are different (ie: Parallel twin, V-Twin, 2stroke, 4stroke). but here is a link that may help you understand the basics(even if this isn't your bike the info will help you. read all you can find before starting, especially if you don't know what you are doing and want to learn.
three hours in a book is cheaper than one hour at the parts store.

Not enough information here really is there! What's the bike? Whats up with it? Whats it doing that it shouldn't be doing? Whats it not doing that it should be doing? Why do you want to 'refurb' it? What exactly do you mean by refurb?

you never know untill you open it up, but you will at least need a complete gasket kit, bearings, rings, carb rebuild kit, then you will have the cost of checking the heads and doing the valves, and honing the cylinders, and pressing the crank bearings in and out, unless you have a shop those things will have to be done by them.

Things you could get before you start: a Haynes or Clymer manual for the bike, possibly a factory manual (you can usually order these, not cheap, but the official source); finally, join the owners club for your bike if there is one - you can tap into their knowledge.

Purchase a shop manual.
It will show you what to check and give you the wear tolerances to see if it needs replacing.
