The USA does not have a government in the form of a democracy. We have a Representative Republic. This were each of the states elect officials to the Federal Government to represent their interests and views. These officials are called Congressmen and Senators. Here the majority does not always rule, it is many times the will of the minority that becomes law. Our elected officials feel this is good for the country. The flaw in this government is that only a small percentage of the people able to vote, actually do vote. So we are stuck with politicians that mislead many into voting for them by their lies and deception. They are many times financed by large corporations and labor unions. Unfortunately, too many Americans are uneducated in the workings of their government and vote for a political party and not the best person for the position.

Very good question...most Americans are under the impression they are a democracy..when in fact they are a republic..although the principles of Democracy are there it cannot be called a true democracy...example take the 2000 Election...Al Gore got by far the most votes...but because of the voting system ...Electoral Colleges...it was given to G W Bush...A true democracy is where one man one vote counts to the final result and the man with the most votes wins.

Another method which is used in some european countries is proportional representation...and this has the same effect of Electoral Colleges and also gives smaller parties a chance to have a voice in Government ...sometimes too a big a voice considering the amount of people they represent.

So you take your choice...one man one (demoracy)...Electoral colleges..(Republics)....Proportional Representation...power in the hands of small minority political parties...

How about a "Constitutional Representative Republic".
The only thing that resembles a democracy is the method of selecting the representatives.

We are supposed to be a constitutional republic. What we actually are becoming appears to be something else. Some have defined it as fascism, feudalism and corporatism where the needs of the state and/or business form policy.
