I've already given the baby tons of clothing (from my daughter) and i have more I'm going to give her this visit. but i need ideas on a really great gift for my friend and for her baby. something she doesn't have already (which isn't too hard, she doesn't have too much just yet) they can be separate gifts or a gift that they can share. also, the gift(s) need to be around $20 or so (i'm on a budget!) any ideas are greatly appreciated.

why dont you just give them a gift card. That way, she can buy what she really needs.

Why not buy $20 worth of diapers, and make her a diaper cake? She will love it, and you know she needs the diapers. Here are a couple of sites to check out:

If you don't like the diaper cake idea, how about a Boppy Pillow? I *loved* mine, and I used it everyday. If she is nursing, it will be a lifesaver. You can get a Boppy for around $20. Also, if she's nursing, get her a Sleep Bra from Motherhood Maternity (in the mall.) They are only around $14, and I *loved* mine, it was so wonderful.

Also, she would probably really appreciate a Diaper Genie and a refill. And a lesson from you on how to use it, since you already have a daughter! That would also be a useful baby gift that would be right around $20.

I hope this helps! I am sure she will appreciate any gift you give.

Whatever you do, don't get her anything living (plants or animals)! She needs to focus on her and the baby for the time being. You could do a "spa" package for her (bath soap, bubbles, body wash, loofah, etc) for under that amount. You could also get her her favorite cd or movie so she can relax. Don't buy her any clothes as her body is still changing.
For the baby, I always enjoyed getting diapers. These cost a lot when you have a new baby. I wouldn't get the baby any toys as it will be a while before they will use them. You could get a special stuffed animal for later (the baby won't need it now). Also, you could get her a "medicine basket" for the baby. This could include pain relivers (tylenol for infants), gas drops for infants, little clippers for nails, pascifier (if the baby takes one), diaper ointment, vasiline (for whatever)). This is a good idea because you never know when you will need one of these items and usually, it is in the middle of the night.
Either way, I am sure the mom will love anything you can contribute. A gift card (or even money for any store) is always appreciated as well.

A gift for both mom and baby, have you considered a baby book with a disposable camera? I got this as one of my gifts and it's really nice to have. She's gonna want to put all the first memories down in that book and the camera is something that is handy to capture those memories. When the baby is older he/she will love looking at their own book just about them. I hope this was of some help.

A gift certificate for her to go out to eat while you babysit the baby.
Trust me, its been all about baby now for her for so long, something that is just for her that she can do with her spouse or boyfriend without the baby will do wonders for her. It will remind her that she is still an individual not just a new mom.
I received this gift from a friend and it was the nicest thing ever!

For the mom, you might get a gift certificate to a food place - one that delivers to her house would be great! I know how exhausted I was the first few weeks. For the baby, maybe something she will need a little later. Like a potty chair or sippy cups, etc. Having those things as gifts certainly helps mom later when she needs them.

When you are buying for a baby, it is always easy, especially a girl. Why not get her a teddy of some sort, or an all-in-one baby suit. Things like this will definitely come in handy, and your friend will be appreciative of the gift.

I have a 6month old daughter and she was my first child, too. The absolute best gift you can give without making sure that she doesn't have too many of the same things is...a gift card. That way she can get whatever she needs. Trust me that is the best gift.

One of the best gifts I got was a gift card to a nice photo studio (Picture People). Had it not been for the gift card, I probably would have gone to a cheap place like Walmart, but now I have awesome newborn pictures to enjoy forever.

you might laugh at this - but this is the gift that mattered most to me-- diapers. in different sizes.. not just newborn-- everyone throws in a package of newborns in their gifts and it isn't until that fateful day that the baby bounces up to the next size does the mom go -- oh no i have 23 things of newborns and no size ones-- i had a friend give us diapers in size one and 2 and let me tell you on that fateful day i rushed to the cabinet where i kept them and thought of her and said a thankful prayer.. and the idea of a gift card to a local grocery store..for when she is running in to buy more and more and more diapers!!!

I have three children and believe it or not instead of getting all the cute stuff, I like getting DIAPERS! LOL! The first 3 months the baby will go through soo many and they are expensive, so if I was you I would get her stocked up on diapers so she wont have to go to the store every few days.
