Consider celebrities who are viewed as examples for
minors and other easily influenced individuals.

Some of these celebrities obtain their "coolness" from
drug use and irresponsible behavior. Media tabloids
give the celebrities the publicity that the celebrities require.

What are your thoughts on allowing publicizing a celebrity
in drug rehab as an example that irresponsibility has
consequences? If only a celebrities enjoyment of
irresponsibility is publicized then isn't that reinforcing
irresponsibility for the media viewers.

The main controversy in this question is as follows:
Is it more socially beneficial to prevent drug use before
it happens?
OR/Both?
Is it more socially beneficial to make current drug users
comfortable with seeking rehab?

Obviously this a multi-dimensional controversy. Some people
develop drug habits due to sincere life crisis while others
develop drug habits for unreasonable casual reasons.

Parents do have a responsibility
to guide their children. However,
in my opinion the purpose of a
democratic society is to ask the world
to change to suit the needs of the
people in the society. Parents
should get involved with the
policy makers they vote into
office on behalf of their children
who don't know the consequences
of inaction.

it is indeed a multi-dimensional controversy..
multi-faceted, & each of them draws their own audience.
Some out of pity, some out of Fanaticism, some out of genuine empathy(most especially for those who had the same predicament, either through family or social outcasting)

you were able to adress all the areas of this problem through your analysis.. your questions were actually answers themselves.
since it's more like watching ants killing themselves through a magnifying lense, soon enough the sunlight will incinerate those that stays stagnant..
they better move out or they all crash & BURN.

A mandatory drug rehab is a good move and also good for public image for those taking the move.

I agree with the idea of prevention and by prevention I mean from the real cause of why people get involved in drug abuse.
The real cause of this problem is the family where its head is irresponsible. There should be a legislation that covers punishing those couple who are incompetent in bringing up children. The government should have some sort of power to intervene in family matters specially those that directly involved mismanagement of children upbringing. Make it mandatory for existing families to undergo somekind of orientation to a proper course for upbringing children and follow this up with the involvement of the community that may be encouraged as voluntary move but enhanced in every which way by the authorities.

Now is the time to move on this considering the present scenarios where even those who were supposed to be serving as role model have become the worst of bad examples.

Man can't do this without the Lord. The Lord easily delivers us from addictions.

The media does society a great wrong when they glorify a drug addict. Music videos and 30 minute Hollywood shows
portray the pretty people as perfect and they are scarred, bitter, evil, ugly inside and desperate.

Britney Spears was a recent heart breaking episode of a young woman with her life so tormented and desperate. I just wanted to put my arms around her and tell her that God loves her and she is special to the Lord. She doesn't need to impress and disgust and even consider other people. What she is looking for is exactly what the Lord gives freely to us all.
But it is not easy to snatch someone out of the fires of the devil. Satan plans to destroy her if he can. The Lord wants to save her.

I think we need to prevent it . These days being a" bad boy " or " bad girl "is considered " cool ". Todays celebrities and athlete's are the " in crowd " if they have rehab and jail time on their resume. Some consider it a badge of honor. ( go figure). In todays hedonistic society, prevention is the only recourse. It will be very difficult to achieve, though. Sad but true.

Unfortunately, someone developing a drug habit has nothing to do with what they see on TV, it is a personal pain that causes drug/alcohol abuse, not watching someone else do it. As a parent, my example will have the strongest influence on my children, it is my words they will hear througout their lives. What the celebrities are doing is not where we need to be putting our focus, if your children are using them as examples then you have bigger problems. Put your focus on parenting your own children, speaking to them about what they see and hear -- speaking to them about making their own choices, having the control of their own lives and making choices that will benefit them, not hurt them.
It's up to us as parents to raise our children, not ask that the world change to make our jobs easier, it doesn't work that way.

I think everyone should have mandatory rehab once. Next time jail time. Next time, a long prison sentence. For the sellers of drugs, Prison. Next time capitol punishment. Smugglers, the same as sellers. Obviously I hate drugs!!!

I think we should leave the celebs alone while in rehab. It is hard and they should be givin a proper chance to quit. But I don't think going into rehab for publicity will work. You have to want to quit. Not want to fix your image.
