Last night from about 6pm til 10pm i had pains as low as where my pubic hair starts. The pain was sharp and gripping made me want to cross my legs til the pain went. It happened 4 times about an hour apart The pain didn't last long about 15 seconds. Nothing since! I'm in the unknown as this is my first. People have said contractions feel like period pains, i never had any pains with my periods so i don't know how they are meant to feel. Any advice would be useful.

They could well have been contractions. Often, they start, then go away. I would have my bag ready and not do too much today! Contractions are a low, gripping pain, a bit like if you have wind and wish you could just do a big fart! (Sorry!) You'll definitely know when you're having proper, full on contractions - but it's hard to explain the sensation to someone who hasn't had them before. They can make you feel a little nauseous too. When in full flow, you'll probably be doubled up and breathless. It hurts, it's not unbearable, and you get a gorgeous baby from it, so hang on in there.

Since you didn't mention that your belly cramped up, I would guess that you weren't experiencing contractions. When you have contractions, your belly will get as hard as a basketball. The low sharp pains could be your cervix dilating or things in your pelvic area shifting around to make way for baby to come through. Since the pains also stopped, don't worry about them being contractions. If you're worried though, you could always call your OB/GYN office and ask for their opinion. Period pains are very painful and real contractions feel just like that - painful! They make your belly feel crampy, like you have to go to #2 but the pain is in the front of your belly, not in your bum.

The last weeks of pregnancy suck I'm also 39 weeks and sometimes I have really convincing contractions too, but they never lead to anything.
They are probably just strong braxton hicks contractions.
When you aree really in labour the pains will get longer, stronger and more frequent and wont stop until the baby comes out!

Hi,
Sounds like pressure from baby pushing head into birth canal and usually labour follows quite soon. Labour pain begins like a dull ache and can be in your back or tightness around the front,a bit like a belt being tightened but this can vary and I think instinctively you will know when labour starts. Use your time wisely and rest for the remainder.x

You may have had Braxton Hicks contractions. These contractions prepare the uterus and move the baby into position for birth . If you are worried, speak to your midwife or the maternity department at your local hospital. Hope you have your baby soon.
