The people at Comcast are obviously no help. Could my settings be wrong? Is anyone an expert at this that could possibly help me?

I am getting 12 Mbps when I should be getting 6MBps.
I am getting bits and not bytes. I am not getting double what I should.

ComCast and other CATV providers indicate they have a typical rate of X Mbps. In your case it is 6 Mbps; the actual value specified is a typicalor average rate NOT a guarenteed rate nor is it always the same. As more users connect the speed drops, as fewer users are on the speed increases.
If you are seeing 12 Mbps rather than the typical 6 Mbps it means that the ComCast capability is much better than planned. Enjoy it. As ComCast adds users to your circuit it will become closer to 6 Mbps.
You have done nothing wrong.

Comcast doesn't have a plan for 6 mega bytes per sec. Whoever told you it was 6 mega bytes per sec was mistaken. It's 6 Mbits per sec. Comcast also offers 8 Mbps for around $52 per month, but they don't have a 48Mbps (6 mega bytes per sec) plan. If you need that speed you'll need a T3 connection (probably around $5000 per month).

Comcast does have what they call "power boost" which is a 30sec to 1min of 12mbps that could be the reason for your higher speed.

What's the problem? You're getting double the speed you should be getting.
