Yes, I read it in a blog called ideas2explore.com, which mentioned the name of the company called powercast. It does exist, but on a small scale. Try checking out business2.0 for the article also. Hope it helps. Neat idea

Ever heard of a Tesla coil? Nikola Tesla designed these coil to run some innovative experiments including wireless electric power transmission.
I've never been a big fan of Wikipedia but this article does a reasonable job explaining how it was suppose to work.

Yeah, magnetism, you can convert magnetic fields into electricity by moving a magnet in a coil of wire and electric flow into magnetic fields. I am sourcing a government kids website but the information is concise. Just look under how electricity is generated. From there use your imagination. If powerlines had only one line the magnetic field they generate would be so large that you could use a kind of transformer to convert that magnetic field into electricity. In a sense that is wireless. Also considering that our planet generates a huge magnetic field, taping into that would help you create electricity.

yeah...
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,743234,00.asp gives an article about it....
wireless electricity is an alternative energy. see http://www.braincourse.com/wirelessa.html
and some discussion about it at http://www.chaddickerson.com/blog/2006/01/24/whatever-happened-to-wireless-electricity/
