You will need to set up a wireless access point that your wireless laptop can connect to. Get yourself a wireless router hooked up to the cable modem, and you'll be all set.

I presume from your unclear message that:

1. You have an ISP that terminates service with a modem that has an ethernet port. The ISP does not provide a wireless router integrated with the modem. Your ISP provides you with a dynamic public IP address.
2. You have a laptop that has an 802.11 a,b,g wireless attachment either built in or as a result of a wireless pcmcia card in the notebook.

If the above is correct, you need a router and a wireless access point. You can purchase a router with a wireless access point integrated into one unit, and these are often called wireless routers.

Set up the notebook's wired LAN port to accept ip addresses automatically. Connect a CAT5 cable between the notebook's wired LAN port and the router's LAN port. Log onto the router as the router manual will direct you. (Check the manual as the router maker may want you to have a static LAN IP and if so, do as they direct. This is becommng less common but it is not unheard of.) Configure the public side of the Router for a Dynamic WAN IP address per router manual directions. Configure the private side of the router to assign LAN IP addresses via DHCP. Enable wireless transmission on the router and be sure to use ALL security the router provides (encryption, password, MAC address validation as the manual discusses; be sure to enter the MAC address of the Wireless port on your notebook into the MAC address registry of the router as well as the MAC addresses of all wireless units you want to have access the router). Note carefully on paper what you did as you need to configure the wireless of the notebook to be consistant.

Now configure the wireless notebook port to be consistent with the wireless access point configuration.

Keep the wired connection between notebook and router connected. Turn off the modem and the router; connect a cable between modem and router WAN port (see manual about need for cross vs straight cable as this needs to be proper). Turn on modem, about 30 seconds later turn on router. Allow both devices to warm up.

Check for valid internet connectivity. You should be able to see internet sites. If you cannot there is a problem with the WAN connection and this needs to be resolved. If you have a dynamic IP from the ISP and the router is set for dynamic IP you should be ok - so check this out.

Assuming that you are successful in getting the internet, then open Command Prompt (start - run, type in cmd and hit enter). Type in "ipconfig /all", not including the quotes and being sure to leave a single space before the /, and hit enter.

You should see both the wired and wireless notebook ports have valid LAN IP addresses. If you do not have a valid wireless LAN IP it will indicate it is not connected.

If the wireless LAN IP is not connected, check the configuration of the wireless port on the notebook as shown by the wireless notebook port maker, and being sure to configure it to include all security you put in for the router including encryption, passwords, etc as something is not accurate there.

Go back to command prompt and type in "ipconfig /all" (not including quotes) and hit enter. Wireless and wired ports should have valid LAN ip addresses.

Once the wireless port of notebook has a wireless IP address, you no longer need the wired link between notebook and router.
