Trivandrum has Kovalam beach [too commercial], Vizhinjam and Varkala near by, also the Padmanabhaswamy temple in the city is worth a visit for its architectural splendour as is the Padmanabhapuram wooden palace on the road to Nagercoil. One can also visit Neyyar wildlife sanctuary and dam close by or Ponmudi hill station, or Veli water sports lagoon. Trivandrum even though the capital, has a small town atmosphere and is perhaps all the better for it. Cochin has the Fort Cochin historic area, harbour boat ride with dolphins, Chinese fishing nets etc and backwater trips. It's mush more commercial than Trivandrum. You can also go to Parambikulam WLS, Kumarakom, Munnar and Thekkady from Cochin but certainly not on a one day trip. From a strictly one day sightseeing point of view, Cochin would probably be a better bet.
