Can any old ornament or stone be put into an aquarium?
I have a few ornaments that are clean, have no glitter or paint on them and would look good in a fish tank, are they safe??

I'll start with stone: Most rock is fine for the aquarium. Before putting a rock into the aquarium take it while it is dry and put some vinegar on it. If it bubbles the minerals in the rock will dissolve in the aquarium and change your water chemistry.

China/Pottery: Raw fired clay like flowerpots are fine for aquariums. If you soak them for a week or two you can take a drill and add holes or do a variety of things to the flowerpots to suit your fish. You can also get a bunch of them, break them and use the curved pieces with a little bit of the bottom left on them to make caves. China could be anything from a coating that will kill your fish to items that are made for the aquarium. Sorry but some china will kill your fish and some will not. I recommend against useing china that wasn't made specifically for the aquarium.

It will probably be OK. Normally if I am unsure of something I not use it or have a Test tank with a few fish and put it there first to see what happens.
I do know it is said not to use Granite Rocks in an Aquarium, never tried to see what they do, just figure I use something else.
But, most likely they be OK. No promises though.

What are they made of? Silver or gold are really the only two metals that should be put into a fish tank. Clays, unless glazed should be kept from the tank as well since they have a knack of leaching minerals and toxins into the tank.

If you are sure they will hold up to the water and have been cleaned go for it. Just remember no clays or metals.

Stones are usually fine. Sandstone, soapstone, bituminus and limestone should be kept out of the tank again due to leaching

I think it is not a big problem. But be careful of what materials you put in your aquarium. Somehow some kind of materials do have chemical reaction with the water. If you do not want to see your fishes swimming with their stomach upwads, then you should take note of what to put in the aquarium.

You are pretty safe as long as you boil anything that is not new. The only thing I would caution you on is adding shells that come from stores. They usually come from salt water and if you put too many in it can raise the alkaline level by a lot.
