______ Y_____
Isosolese triangle
60m is how long the side is
40m is how long the side is
therefore one side equals 100 metres
i need to know what size is x and y.

the only thing that was given to me was x+y=80, which obviously means the x side and the y side both add to equal 80

how can i find what the number is???
(the answers is said to be a decimal)

please show all your working out and all ideas!!!

You have one equation for x and y. You need a second to find a solution.

Using similar triangles, you know that the ratio of the other sides on the isoceles triangles of which x and y are the espective bases, is the same as the ratio of x to y:

40/(40+60) = x/y

Cross-multiplying, then dividing by 20:

100x = 40y
5x = 2y

You also know that x + y = 80, or that x = 80 - y. Use that to substitute into the equation above:

5x = 2y
5(80 - y) = 2y
400 - 5y = 2y
400 = 7y
y = 400/7 = 57 + 1/7 = 57.1428

Here's what I did:

If the triangle is chopped in two, the bottom will be exactly half the diagonal since the original triangle had three equal sides.

The chopped triangle is now a "right" triangle. If "L" is the diagonal, then :

(L/2)^2 + (??)^2 = L^2

The above is a general rule of right triangles. Solving for (??) yields (L/2)*SQRT(3). This is the length of the vertical side.

The bottom is now half its original length. This means the other slices are also halved.

((L/2)SQRT(3))/6 = 20 (for the sixth slice)
((L/2)SQRT(3))/3 = 40 (for the third slice)

Solving for L gives the number 240/SQRT(3) or 138.56

The fifth slice is "X", so this means:

((L/2)SQRT(3))/5 = X

Solving for "X" yields 24.

HOWEVER: this is true of the half triangle. Therefore, in the whole isosoles triangle, X = 48 and therefore Y has to be 32.

The answers are whole numbers, so despite any rumors, I would be tempted to think this was indeed the answer.

Use proportions. The triangles are similar.

x + y = 80
x = 80 - y

(x/40) = (y/100)

((80-y)/40 = (y/100)

Cross multiply

8000 - 100y = 40y

140y = 8000

y = 57.14

x = 80 - y

x = 22.86

-4 = 3a + b definite, there's a linear function that is going by the two (a million,2) and (3, -4).. undergo in strategies which you in straight forward terms want 2 factors to have a line.. get slope: 6/-2 = -3 y - 2 = -3 (x - a million) y - 2 = -3x + 3 y = -3x + 5
