I will be cleaning out a very large storage locker filled with everything old and useless, like old mattresses, chairs, tables...etc etc etc. We plan on renting a U-Haul truck, loading it up...and then...what? We need to find a local public dump that allows folks to dump off old items and anything considered trash... a regular dumpster couldn't even begin to hold up the incredible amount of stuff we need to get rid of, plus that is probably against some kind of law to leave mattresses and tables, and large things of trash all around a public dumpster.... So we need a public dump.... any clue in the world how to go out about finding this? Call city management perhaps?

please no comments about trying to sell it.. I just need an answer to my question I already stated.... (And we cannot try to sell this... I live about 45 minutes away from this area, work 2 busy jobs, and these are all items of my fathers...he is a pilot and lives in another country..hes in town for 2-3 days to get rid of this locker...trying to sell all this stuff - which believe me, if you saw it, isn't worth it.... is just something we do not have time for. )

I know what you are going through. I just moved and had to get rid a lot of crap.

Call your town (or check their web site) and ask who they use for disposal or ask for recommendations.

You could contact a waste management company that will drop off a dumpster. You would be surprised how large they come. All you have to do is fill it and they will haul it away for you. Unfortunately, it may cost you hundreds of dollars to do this.

Anyway, I feel your pain!

Good luck!

I know . . . no comments about selling. But that may still be a good bet. There are people in most places that will buy "junk" in large lots for resale at actions, flea markets, etc. Check the classified ads in a local paper. At the very least, they may be willing to clean out the stuff for free.

There is no such thing as a public dump where you can take things. A landfill will take your junk, but you will have to pay for that as well. Also, many would not allow you to simply take a truck in and start unloading by hand. You would need a dump truck. Given that, a roll-off dumpster would be another option.

You could rent a large "roll off" dumpster and just load everything into that. The company then handles the dumping. This is the kind you see at construction sites, they are really huge and not terribly expensive when you factor in the time and fuel it would take to make numerous trips.

Check your local paper for a person who hauls off "yard sale" goods after the sale.

Ask the storage facility management what they do with abandoned property, then ask if you could pay them to handle this for you.

Woolies gives their stuff to charity on the day of the expiration (not past the date, and that is for their packaged ready-made foods, I don't know what they do with the produce), or at least they used to. If I remember correctly one was an after school program for needy kids and another was a group of homes for Aids orphans. I'm not sure about the other stores but it would be criminal if they just throw it away when there are so many people in need.

Copper, aluminum, steel, and iron should not go to land fill! It should be recycled. If you are short on time, get on line and check out newspaper adds in the area the storage locker is located. Someone probably specializes in cleaning out garages, basements, and attics. That person will probably recycle to maximize profit. If you don't see an add, place one, or as someone already suggested, talk to the management of the storage facility. You're planning to spend money on truck rental and gas anyway. Pay someone to do it right.

Woah, hold on, why not try to sell some of that stuff and make a little money. What may be junk to you, just might be a treasure to others. Put an ad in the newspaper and inform everyone that you need to get rid of this stuff, you might be surprised on how many people go for this stuff.
