He was a bit of both, but that is what made him and his writing so great. In my opinion anyhow...

There is a very fine line between genius and insanity. Lennon rode the line, and strayed both ways.

John Lennon was just a man in his prime, in his time. He was in fact a hippie that did drugs but who didn't way back then. The rest of the Beatles did them too. Yoko Ono was his crazy, insane, wife without a voice who used his reputation for her gain after he was killed.

Jim! You're becoming my new Buddy! Another great question! My answer is simple. He was actually both. And it is a shame. Get a hold of his Box Set. It will absolutely take you to places, that you have never thought possible. Keep up the good ones, Partner!

Not sure whether he was a genius or not.
What would have been nice is if he could be described as modest and self effacing.
I think that would have given his music a lot more prestige

i imagine fairly both.... genius is frequently bordering on insane. for instance, Albert Einstein. the guy discovered the speed of light, theory of relativity, and so on... yet didnt bathe or positioned on socks oftentimes. Van Gogh is yet another tremendous party of this. so ya, fairly both .
