Some MP3 players allow you to do this. I also believe that some cell phones and digital recorders can do the same thing.

Mini Disc recorders (such as Sony Walkman Mini Disc Recorders) are brilliant for voice and music recording quality. I have successfully transferred recordings to a PC in .wma format using Windows Movie Maker (as if recording a commentary). There must be something to convert .wma to .mp3 but I am not sure what.

There certainly is. I would reccomend the Samson Zoom H4 ( http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodID=1901 ). This little piece of kit is very very good.

It can record to various different formats, including straight to MP3 (up to 34 hours of it!!).

Go to the link and check the feature list. It also looks like a tazer, so you can scare your friends when you first get it (".)

Also see http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_vr_digitalrecorders.asp for less specialized items.
