During the Windows shut down process, Windows has to close certain system files, the registry, etc. If that is not done properly it can cause the files to become corrupt and Windows not to boot. If you are getting a message on startup that Windows needs to check for consistency, it means that the computer was inproperly shut down. Let it do the check and then it will not ask again. If the automatic check is not resolving the issue, you can manual run "chkdsk /f" to force a consistency check of the disk.

But it is a safety feature to keep your computer running properly.

Checking Disk For Consistency

First and most important back up any and all files you do not want to loose in case of a hard drive crash/failure. This should always be done on a regular schedule just in case this ever happens. At some point and no one can tell ahead you will have a hard drive fail. Now to the problem, after backing up your files, picture any thing of importance to you do a system defragement and disc clean up from start, accessories system tools. Do a system repair from your recovery CD's. Buy and always use a lap top cooling pad with built in fans, this helps cool the lap top and prolong its life as heat is the enemy of electronics. Make sure the intake vent and exhaust vents are clear/clean and not blocked. If you can determine which drive is giving the problem and non of the above fixes it then replace the bad hard drive or both hard drives at same time then install the OS from the recovery Cd's and you have a new clean OS. Hope this helps

Well if this was the 1st 2nd or 3rd time then may be you didnt shut down the computer properly, may you just dont allow the scan disk utility (the tool that checks your hard drive for consistency) to complete its job when the pc boots up. But if thats not the case then may your hard drive has developed bad sectors or there may be some other problem with it.
To check wether the above is true right click on the drive that is being checked at the startup and select the scan disk option. See the results and you will probably notice the problem yourself.

So what were these "internet steps"? Two things you want to check are the hard drive's condition (using tools like HDTune), and viruses. Your files might be blocked by annoyance viruses, or may be endangered by hard drive failure.

Because last time you used it, it didn't shut down properly. The power could have been cut before it shut down all the way, or it had a hanging app or error. Just reboot, let it do it's check, and it'll be fine from there.
