Foster Brooks and there have been others . i just want to say however the fact that you BELIEVE the performer is really drunk during the act is testimony to how great the act was.Do you think actually believe that any entertainment venue would ever take a chance on employing someone who is totally obliterated? of course not not only is it risky revenue wise it is risky insurance wise.. the act is set up and designed for you to believe he is bombed thats the joke, and that all his stuff was ad libbed or improvised THAT'S THE BEAUTY OF THE ACT and the talent of the performer. It a;ways bugs me that people think Dean Martin was a drunk LOL nothing could be farther from the truth .. it was a total act Dean Martin pretended to be a big drinker in his later entertainment life (after his partnership with Jerry Lewis ) when he would be onstage with "the rat pack"{, (Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis jr , Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford..(the ORIGINAL Ocean's 11) but check out Dean Martin's movies of that era check out his huge HAPPY family and his beautiful homes at those times. a drunk does not have those things. or if he does he eventually loses them...as far as Dino.. it was colored water in his glass onstage he was a very serene un Hollywood type of family man.

Dear Forgetful,
WHO WASN'T? Most comedians and actors in those days drank like fish, did drugs like candy and you know what else. I think you may be talking about Joey Bishop who was fired for drinking too much before the show. or Dean Martin (had the variety show with the 'Gold Diggers') Biggest drinkers on the tube I can remember.

Could you narrow this down a bit? This could deswcribe at least a dozen that I can think of. Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, Paula Pounstone etc.

Sounds like Mitch Hedberg.
I never heard of him til he opened for another comedian one night and while i didn't care for him I was surprised to learn that like 5 months later he died.

Sounds like Lenny Bruce? He really flaked out at the end of his career.

Wow, there have been so many. Richard Pryor maybe? Chris Farley? Sam Kinison? There have been a lot. Maybe one of these is the one you are thinking of.
