Okay, lets take this one at a time.
Past lives...hmmm...if you're talking about incarnations of lives, about having lived, died, been born again as someone else, then, ancestry has not a thing to do with it. I, personally, don't believe in re-incarnation. But, if you're talking about genetic memory, then, ancestry is all about it.
Our ancestors genetic relationship with ourselves is obvious. Humans are all genetically linked. We all carry the same set of basic genomes, but we each also carry a set of genetic markers that are particular not only to ourselves, but to the specific cultrual groups from which our ancestors came. Geneticists can map the biogeographics in your DNA that looks at kinship and descent based on biogeography, a combination of biology and geography. You may be an American for as far back as your family knows, maybe your origins here began as one of the Pilgrims, but your DNA can tell you where those ancestors came from. Were they Anglo-Saxons? Were they Celts? You amy not know, but thos ancestors left behind specific markers that you still carry today.
Our ancestry affects us in ways that we, for the most part, ignore or outright refuse. Each group of people, because of events that happened in the past, events that changed lives, adopted a way of thinking, doing, seeing, interpetting that they then passed on to thier children, who passed it on, until today we have customs, both familial and cultural, that we still practice today. Fourth of July is celebrated with parades that usually include groiups of "Minutemen" marching to drums and fifes. Why? We don't have a standing milita today that we can call on, yet we celebrate it. But, it changed our ancestors lives. It became custom. The same way with so many things we take for granted. Superstitions...knock on wood, spill salt and throw a pinch over your shoulder, palm itching means money......religious festivals, Chinese New Year, giving a quilt made of pices of the mothers baby clothes as a family tradition, twins running in a family, blue eyes, red hair....the list goes on and on.
