I know I must sound completely blonde but if I bought an all in one printer/fax/scanner/copier where do I have to plug in the fax? Do I have to link it up with my telephone line or does it just go through the computer as I have a wireless connection to the internet. Can anyone help me as Im stumped.

In order to be able to send faxes you must connect an RJ-11 cable(telephone cable) from the RJ-11 port(telephone jack) from the all in one printer to a telephone jack that has a dial tone. The RJ-11 cable or telephone cable should have come with the all in one printer.

It still has to connect to your phone line. If you have a phone jack available close simply plug the line cord into the phone jack and into the line jack on the back of your printer. Then if you had a phone plugged into that jack, plug the phone into the jack labeled with a picture of a phone and your all set. Pretty simple to do, then just configure your fax settings using the menu on the fax machine by pressing menu and scrolling through the menus until you get everything set that it asks for.

You do not usually connect a wireless router into a phone line by the way. A modern wireless router usually connects to a cable line (like the kind you plug your tv system into). The output of that goes to your computer through a connection called an RJ45 Ethernet jack.

Normally for all-in-one, there are drawings on the back of the printer next to connection slots. The drawing of the wall connector goes to your wall jack that you normally connect your phone line to. If you only have one wall (phone) jack, you can connect your telephone to the all-in-one connection slot with a drawing of a telephone.

Lastly, if you want to connect to your computer for fax software (not necessary for the fax, but necessary for printing). You usually use a cable called a USB cable. It has a
tiny connector on one end that goes to the all in one (the connection slot has a symbol that looks like a trident

The other side of the USB cable (the wider side) goes to your computer USB port.

Regarding cable types -- aside from the USB printer cable, you use the telephone cable that looks like you normally use for your telephone to make the connections.

Yes you do have to plug it into a phone jack, otherwise how will you get a fax (which comes down a phone line from other fax machines). You can get a duel phone jack because your wireless router must also be plugged into a phone line.
