I had the surgery after I had cancer. I had the surgery when I was 36, and had no complications. Some people have a nerve to their vocal cords damaged. This could take months to get their voice back.

1. Recovery depends on what you mean by it. I was eating solid food the next day with some pain, but it took months to get my energy back. Plan on it taking 3-6 months for your mother to get back to 90%. The last last 10% may never come. I think my stitches were removed within 2 weeks.

2. She will need bed rest, I was exhausted for about 2 weeks after the surgery. I went back to work for 1/2 days after 1 week. I needed more time off. For a while I went to work, went home and rested until the next work day. Her mind may also be off for a while, she may be more forgetful and feel a little depressed.

If she has no complications. She may need pain medication for a few days, I didn't bother with it. Exhaustion was the big thing. Also she will need to take thyroid medication daily, they started me 2 days after surgery, at about 1/2 the dose I needed. Every 4-6 weeks they should raise her dose, and hopefully they will find the correct dose quickly. The medication is actually replacement thyroid hormones.

risks for thyroidectomy include the following:

* Bleeding and possible airway obstruction
* Temporary or permanent loss of ability to speak due to paralysis of the vocal chords
* Inadequate thyroid function (hypothyroidism)
* Injury to the adjacent parathyroid glands
* Inadequate level of calcium in the blood (hypocalcemia)

Expectations after surgery

When performed by experienced endocrine surgeons, the outcome of thyroid surgery is usually excellent. Thyroid function tests may need to continue following thyroid surgery, and thyroid hormone replacement maybe necessary.

Convalescence

In general, patients recover rapidly from uncomplicated thyroid surgery. Most patients are able to resume most normal activities within 1-2 weeks.
