I have just swapped from a manual to an automatic car and the auto seems to be drinking petrol. Is there anything I can get the garage to do to make it drink less?!

Dont think so, you can see if they can tune it up for you but autos are usually a bit jucier on fuel in my experience.

Automatic cars are slightly heavier on fuel than manual cars due to the slippage between the fluid clutch in the gear box. If there is a substantial difference in consumption and you are comparing like for like (Same car, same engine) then you need to check out the following:-
1) Gear box oil level.
2) Service record.
3) Kick down setting.
4) Tyre Pressure.

Well automatic cars use more petrol because you have no control over the gears, whereas in a manual car you get better fuel economy because you can short-shift, keeping the revs low and therefore use less petrol.

What's the make/model/engine size of the car?

Toyota Prius, only available as automatic, gives better mpg than other similar sized cars. eg 60 mpg depending on driving conditions

if your garage can fit a battery system that would help a lot.
see www.phoenixmotorcars.com,
also £0 road tax, £0 congestion charge, £0 car parking in some cities like Westminster, refuel at home or work in 10 minutes from cheap fuel.

The only thing you can do is not step on the accelerator so hard and keep the top speed down below 60 MPH. Your current engine is going to consume the fuel it needs. Make sure you have a clean air filter and properly inflate your tires.

Those are the only things that can really be done to save on fuel.

Good luck!

Yeah a manual..auto's do seem to drink more fuel..but unfortunately there is no magic potion unless you covert to LPG. Failing that just keep your car serviced regularly, and keep the tyre pressure correct, and avoid harsh accelerating.

All the best :)

Yes automatics can be a little less economical, but not by vast amounts....I assume you know about kick down, where the gearbox will change down a gear if you press hard on the accelerator...just be careful and let the car change gear when it wants to...does take a bit of getting used to.

the timing on most cars are set with the ecu control box and theres no way of setting it to lower fuel economy and the ratio of automatic gear change cant be altered, but if it is carburettor with distributor it can be altered and modify.either way if its using more fuel than it should be it might be injectors faulty or spark plugs/air filter.look at the Manuel that came with the car and see what fuel consumption it consumes and then take it from there.

TAKE IT TO FUEL DRINKERS ANNONYMOUS! sorry bad joke it could be in need of a tune up or you are too heavy on the gas peddle and keeping it in kick down mode, try for a week to go easy on the peddle rather than a stamp and go try sqeeze on go , if it is high revving before gear changingn then you might need to check the gear box oil,.

I would start with a tune up but most autos don't return as good a gas mileage as a manual. If it is very excessive it could be such things as bands or clutches not releasing properly but this is not that common
