Amid all the panting, a dog at play makes a distinctive, breathy exhalation that can trigger playfulness in other dogs, says a Nevada researcher. Yes, it might be the dog version of a laugh.

"To an untrained human ear, it sounds much like a pant, 'hhuh, hhuh,'" says Patricia Simonet of Sierra Nevada College in Lake Tahoe. However, this exhalation bursts into a broader range of frequencies than does regular dog panting, Simonet discovered when she and her students analyzed recordings.

They observed the bursts during play but not in aggressive clashes, Simonet reported in Corvallis, Ore., last week at a meeting of the Animal Behavior Society.

Well, in a way they do. A person may look at an animal and think: "If you were not so dumb, you could tell me what you are thinking", while the animal may be looking back and thinking: "and if you were a little brighter I wouldn't have to".

To assume that a Chimpanzee, for example, is feeling as we do when it appears to present a "human smile" is anthropomorphic - but to presume that it doesn't can be too.

Actually some do laugh.

A good example is gorillas and other primates. The best way I can describe it would be like when human laughs so hard that they lose the sound of their voice and only a few tiny bits of sound escape to the point it sounds like panting almost.

They get happy
But they have nothing to laugh at because they are the funny ones and don't realize it.

Laughter is commonly regarded as the expression of various feelings, such as sheer joy, lightness of heart, amusement, and feelings more grave than any of these. Animals don't appear to enjoy these feelings as humans do - they just survive.

I think my dog smiles sometimes but I'm just wishing human characteristics on her.

Laughter provides powerful, uncensored insights into our unconscious. It simply bubbles up from within us in certain situations. Other animals produce vocalizations during play, but they are so different that it’s difficult to equate them with laughter. Rats, for example, produce high-pitch vocalizations during play and when tickled. But it’s very different in sound from human laughter.
