Why is English a compulsory course to do the HSC? I mean, people argue that English is the most important subject because you'll get no where if you can't communicate with others etc etc... but all we do is look at poetry Shakespeare and novels and films and extracts from the Wind in the Willows, for gods sake. Why is it so important to know how to critically analyse texts?? Surely it should only be optional. What do you think??

You're right. You need only know how to flip burgers and read a menu. You don't need to think critically, know anything about the great literature of the world, or learn critical analysis. As long as you can read comic books, you'll be a great success in life. At a dinner party with your fellow fast-food workers, you can discuss the latest characters in comic books, but of course, you'll only be able to say what they're doing. Their motivation will be a mystery to you.

Its all to do with developing skills because you may at some point need to extract information from such things as huge articles of text. Believe me, this can be really daunting, as I regularly do this for my job where I have to extract the important information from 200 page journals.

Even if you never do use those skills, at least you will have them there just in case.

I know it can be tedious, but just stick at it for a bit. It annoyed me at first whilst I was studying further education, but now I'm into higher ed and I know how valuable those skills are to me now, I'm actually thankful of those boring lessons.
