Have you actually read any of the Conan Doyle stories? [They're enormously entertaining -- I've read all of the stories and novels at least four times.]

If not, here's a thumbnail sketch of the friendship: Holmes is brilliant at discovering the truth when others fail. Watson, though a doctor, recognizes that Holmes is significantly more intelligent than he is, and enjoys learning from him. [He does, however, disapprove of Holmes' use of cocaine.] Holmes, possessing a healthy ego, likes Watson hanging around and praising him, and pragmatically appreciates his efforts in helping him in various matters during the stories. Holmes also rather likes that Watson writes and publishes the accounts of the adventures. [The gimmick is that the Conan Doyle stories are written by Watson himself in first-person narrative.] Oh, and though Holmes can be aloof and private much of the time, he does appreciate having a confidante in Watson.

So, both Holmes and Watson are true friends. They each help the other, and they each are occasionally annoyed by the other. But they truly like each other.

Baskerville is told from Watson's view point. So if Holmes tells Watson of ALL details he is discovering, the reader will have no suprises.
Holmes almost seems to be using the good doctor as a decoy to make some investigations while hidden/disguised.
On the whole, however, Holmes needs Watson to bounce ideas off.

elementary - why don't you read the book - failing that there are lots of audio versions of the book. The films don't compare to the original story.

I don't want to do your work (is it a book report?) for you
