I always assumed it was because in most cases then mens matches move a little quicker. The points dont last as long and there is less time between points. That has to do with the fact that men move faster and are slightly stronger. Its age old. I wouldnt mind seeing a few more sets of womens tennis though. Time to change the rule.

It's a hangover from the time before women's liberation. It was assumed that women, being smaller and less muscular than men, couldn't play a five set match and so were only allowed to play three set matches. Personally I think it's time it was changed.

Well, they should play five sets....they always ask to have equality and asks for equal pay....well, why not have them play equal amounts of sets too? but not sure if anyone remembers but back then even as early as the time when it was Graf and Seles that women played only 3 sets during the early rounds but they did play 5 sets in the finals. That was of course short-lived.
