some sport and racing chains do not have master links and require major disassembley of your bike. it is wise to change the sprockets at the same time you change the chain as worn sprockets will cause excessive wear on new chains, which requires more disassembley. most new chains also don't come with a master link for another reason as well. the chains usually wear out about the time you are supposed to do maintenance on your swing arm. so its good to take the bike apart to do it.

some o-ring/x-ring chains can not have master links in them due to the oil in the rollers from the factory. breaking the chain and putting in a master link means that you now have to do added maintenance to an already maintenance tedious place, the drive system.

it would help if you told us what brand/size/type the chain is. that also makes a difference(IE Izumi/520-65/o-ring sealed)

To install endless chains (no master link), the swing arm has to be removed.
You can always cut the chain with a chain breaker and install a master link.
Bring the chain to a motorcycle shop and ask the parts guy for a master link that will fit your chain.

Get a chain disassembler. Don't ever use a master link on a sportbike, that is dangerous. The amount of torque and the speed of a sportbike is enough to actually throw a master link off (that seem unlikely, but it's true, i've seen it happen).

If you don't want to disassemble to install, buy a chain breaker tool:

,remove a link, and replace with a master link and install that way.
