Don't see the connection. Extempore means without preparation, like making a speech without notes, or praying without using a prayer book. Group discussion is just that - a group of people talking about something. You could have an extempore discussion, where a group would be given a subject to discuss without any time to prepare or research. Hope this helps

Extempore is an on the spot program in which you get a topic and u have to explain it right now and u get just 2 or 3 minutes to think on that topic whereas in group discussion some people are divided into groups and they have to present their views at that time.

In extempore you would be given a topic close to a minute earlier and you would be require to speak on that. So no preparation time will be given and its not a group event.

In group discussion you would be required to discuss within a group of people on a particular topic and come to some type of consensus

Generally extempore are held to check the capability of a person that how much and what will he/she can perform on his/her best.
And GD is to check team spirit and how he/she can communicate and how he/she perform in the group of people. Rest you can have from above answer.
