I am a girl who weights 117lbs, and I drive a Mazda Protege. I know how to change my own flat (I seem to get a lot of them) but I can't seem to get the nuts loose on the tire. The pipe trick doesn't always work if the nuts have been tightened at the mechanics'. There's gotta be some chick tool out there to compensate for my lack of upper body strength.

Universal Telescoping Gorilla Style nice rubber grip and easy to put your 100 lb weight on to free the lug nut. it gives you up to 200% more torque than the standard lug wrench!

Blackfuzzystuff, use your intelligence and confront them about the need to NOT use an impact wrench to replace the lug nuts on your wheels after servicing your Mazda.

If they are doing the job correctly they would be using a torque wrench or a torque limiting air wrench to factory specs and I doubt that you would be having this problem.

If this fails then the purchase of a '4 way' wrench, as mentioned in the previous answer, is a very good choice. It will provide a safer way to apply the needed leverage that you need to the lug nuts so that you can remove them more easily

1/2" drive breaker bar that's 24" you can add a pipe onto that. The trick is to set it up to where you use your foot on the end like pushing down a pedal keep adding your weight to it, but not all your weight. To keep it from slipping out, kind of push toward the tire at the same time. If you want to use your hands instead, bounce it hard on the down stroke. There should be enough force there to if you went the wrong direction, you would still get the nut off along with part of the stud.

I hate it when someone else overtightens my lugnuts. I have cars with low torque specs for the lugnuts, and everytime someone else touches them, they're overtightened.

I end up using my own electric Craftsman impact wrench to undo the mess. You can pick up a generic electric impact wrench at Wal-Mart and parts stores. I also use a 4-way wrench and keep it in the trunk. I ended up with warped brake rotors on my then one-year-old car because of the tech screwing up during a free tire rotation.

As you can see, I don't trust other people with my lug nuts. I check and adjust them after someone else puts them on. Get your own torque wrench - you can get a cheap one for $20. Do not use them for loosening lugnuts - you'll mess up the calibration. Use a breaker bar or impact wrench to loosen overtightened lugnuts. Use the torque wrench to tighten them properly.

Tell your garage not to overtighten the lugs......they are famous for pounding the hell out of them with an impact wrench, then no one can get them off again. I have had nuts so tight that I had to stand on my lug wrench to get them to break loose, that is ridiculous.

Go to your local auto parts store and get what is called a '4 way wrench. It will look like a + with 4 different sizes. get the larger wrench as they come in different sizes as well.
