Shaq is definitely the best center to ever play in the NBA. He is a pure big man and has a great all around dominating game (except for free throws) and is an absolute force in the middle. There are very few centers that had coaches absolutely confused when it came to stopping them and Shaq is at the top of the list. He plays in a time where there are amazing athletes on every team and the competition is fierce. Back in the days of Wilt and Bill Russell, the athletes abilities don't come close to what you see today (not to shoot down what they have accomplished).

I totally agree with that, but George Mikan is also another you should consider adding to the list. If I had to put those five (not George Mikan) in order, I'd probably do...

1. Wilt Chamberlain
2. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
3. Bill Russell
4. Shaquille O'Neal
5. Hakeem Olajuwon

Kareem scored alot and had alot around him..Played with a ton of stars..

Wilt scored alot. and had alot around him when he won..Als played with alot of stars..

Russell defended alot and won...(A ton) And also had alot around him.

Shaq scored alot and won.. Played with great players as well..

Hakeem had an all around game.. Great shot blocker, rebounder, could handle the ball well, and was always a great ball stealer for a center.. And he scored alot as well.. Won a couple of rings.. And one that first ring against another great center, all the while having guys like Thorpe, Maxwell, a young Horry and Cassell.. Not really elite talent..

Imo Hakeem is the greatest center of all time, because he wasn't just great in one area.. He was excellent in every single aspect of the game.. He's very underrated..

Wilt hands down. He was an amazing athlete and no one has ever shown the domince in the league that he did. Here are a few numbers. He has the record for most points scored in one game at 100 pts. He has the record for most rebounds in one game at 55. And maybe most impressive, during the 1961-62 season, he averaged 50.4 pts a game. He was a monster.

I completely agree with your list though I think you forgot the first superstar center in the NBA - George Mikan. Also, in the 60's, there were Willis Reed and Nate Thurmond and, more recently, in the 90's we had Patrick Ewing and David Robinson. All these guys were great centers. Sadly, we don't find legit centers like them in the league nowadays. Instead, you see 7-footers running around in the wings.

As a teenager, I loved watching Kareem play with the Bucks and then the Lakers, that was when the NBA was fun to watch.
