I'm in the same situation your in, I was raised in the south and say ma'am and sir to everyone even people half my age.

It is a hard habit to break because it's part of your civil manners. When people asks me to not call them that I just say yes and no without the ma'am and sir.

Goodness me!, why would you want to break that habit? It is very very difficult to instill respect in children nowadays. They dont even communicate enough with their parents let alone address or greet them. It would also give the impression that you are very well brought up or from a very aristocratic family. Keep it up. I think the people who told you not to do that are in fact really touched but also trying to encourage in a humourous manner. If you go to the fast food restaurants or big establishments, they even address small children as such. You have done well..

My cousin (who is also from the South) had this problem too. He said he had to consciously stop himself and remember to use the type of address that the person desired. But also began apologizing for it, and explaining the manners that were drilled into him. Most, after hearing that, didn't really mind his exquisite manners.

Get a tin can and fill it with nuts and bolts. Tie the can to a piece of rope and hang it around your neck. Every time you call someone sir or madam shake it vigorously above your head. You'll stop within a week.

You dont, and you dont want to. When people ask you not to call them sir or ma'am, just reply, it was the way i was raised and i mean it as respect and not degrading to your age.

I am a military vet, im 29 and still refer to all people as sir and ma'am. Its something that i learned as a kid and something that was reenforced while in the service.

I would just remind them politely that you mean it in the best of ways.

Take care and thanks for being one of the few people who still hold onto Values

Ask people Their 'First name' and then use it in conversation. It is an old Nursing trick. It helps to establish a personal contact with others.

DON'T ! IT'S YOUR NATURE THEY MUST RESPECT THAT, WHY ? BECAUSE I'M LIKE YOUAND IF PEOPLE INSIST NOT TO ADDRESS THAT SIR/MA'M WORD THEN FORGET THEM. YOU SHOW RESPECT THOU YOUR EXPECTATION IS NOT TO RESPECT BACK, IT STILL BEING REVEAL THAT YOU ARE A RESPECTIVE PERSON SO DON'T HASSLE YOURSELF ABOUT THAT ISSUE.
