Having done a little research on this condition, my fears for poor Madeleine's safety are confirmed, rather than allayed.
If she has been kidnapped/abducted, her captor(s) will soon realise that she is "less than perfect", if she does indeed display other symptoms sometimes associated with this syndrome.
If she had let herself out of the appartment and wandered off in search of her parents, it is quite possible that she could have fallen into a ditch/been run over.
(We have not been told whether she has impaired vision, as a result of her condition, but I did notice on the news this morning the video of her tripping up at the foot of the steps to the plane.)
For those people who think her parents are directly implicated, the possibility of Madeleine having additional health complications might have a direct bearing on this dreadful case.
I am sure that every possible scenario is being investigated

The defect can appear on its own too, sometimes. I think we would've heard by now if she had any of the associated conditions. I think you're stretching slightly on this one.
The night of the disappearance, there were more than 60 people searching the resort and immediate vicinity, I think if she had fallen in a ditch or been run over, she would've been found.
I do think the distinctive iris marks her as readily identifiable - not what any abductor wants, I think, and liable to make them get rid of her quickly...
Horrible to think about. Poor child.
As for the parents being directly involved, I don't know. There has been nothing to suggest that (apart from their negligent behaviour, obviously), but there's no way to rule it out either - yet.
I find it hard to think about what might have happened the poor little thing. What a tragic mess.
Edit: to me it looked like Amelie is the one who fell, and pulled Madeleine down with her, as they were hand in hand, for what it's worth.

I have nystagmus - a related condition to coloboma, makes me trip up too! toddlers trip up all the time! not quite sure what you are getting at.........do you think she's been sold to childless couple? I'm assuming that you mean mental impairment when you talk about other symptoms, rather than visual acuity as lots of children have visual impairment corrected with glasses. I think if her visual acuity were affected she would already have glasses. I also think that the searchers and sniffer dogs would have found her if she'd fallen in a ditch or been run over.If her eye condition affected her balance, which it can, all the more reason not to leave her unattended in an apartment with a swimming pool outside. I hope they find her soon but I think focusing on her eye problem was a way of illustrating how easily identifiable she would be if there was a sighting - it's not something you can disguise, even if they cut and dyed her hair, her eye would still be the same. Poor little mite, it doesn't bear thinking about.

I have not seen the new footage yet of the plane, but I must let it be know that many children are very likely to trip or fall over especially when the are over excited which I would imagine Madeleine would have been about going on a plane/holiday.
Children are very clumsy when excited and happy as they do not concentrate on the simple things like climbing steps and drinking drinks.
Hope this helps to clear that up for you.

i imagine Cat Alessandra is more beneficial ideal, this is humorous, i did not recognize Australian people have an same names than Brazilian people have. Alessandro to adult men, and Alessandra to women people, this is an fairly elementary call the following. Now Madeleine is used only for women people, and this is form of of diverse, this is Madalena. we've this call separated too, like Alex (adult men) or Sandro (adult men), and Sandra (women people). In us of a Alex is used for women people, this is humorous when we watch a movie and there is a lady stated as Alex. i'm hoping i might want to help you :)

This 'cats-eye' or 'Tear-drop' eye is a chromosonal impairment of some sort but I do not think it affects the vision.
The attention to it is a double edge sword, Sure it makes her extremely identifiable - the abductor couldn't have known about the distinguishing mark until later..

Agree with RM, as the two girls walked up the stairs to the plane, the smaller one toppled over but Madeleine did not let go of her hand and she topped onto her knees.
Was nothing more than that.

I really don't know anything about this syndrome, which must be very rare. This doesn't answer your question really but what struck me about the publicising of this condition was that her captor(s) would realise that she was easily identifiable. This could have endangered her life if it was thought to be too dangerous to keep her. Poor child.

If the poor little baby had wandered & fallen / run over, she would have been found & not had just disappeared. & No! No! NO!!! No parents could be directly implicated in harming their own child. Thats just too awful to imagine.
