Wow, great question....I remember when I was considered "bad" when I would slip into the girls bathroom for a smoke....My how times have changed.
I think it started when Madeline O'Hare complained
She didn't want God and prayer in our schools. So we told him to leave and he honored our wishes
Then,Someone said you better not read the Bible in school,
The Bible that says"Thou shalt! Not kill,Thou shalt not steal,
And love your neighbors as yourself,"And we said, OK...
Dr. Benjamin Spock said We shouldn't spank our children
when they misbehavedbecause their little personalities
would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem.
And we said,An expert should know what he's talking about.
So we won't spank them anymore...
Then someone said Teachers and principals better not
Discipline our children when they misbehave. And the school administrators said No faculty member in this school
Better dicipline a student when they misbehave Because we don't want any bad publicity, And we surely don't want to be sued. And we accepted their reasoning....
And the entertainment industry said, let's make TV shows and movies that promote Profanity, violence and illicit sex...
And let's record music that encourages Rape, drugs, murder, suicide, and satanic themes...And we said,it's just entertainment And it has no adverse effect
And nobody takes it seriously anyway,So go right ahead.
Now we're asking ourselves
Why our children have no conscience,
Why they don't know right from wrong,And why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, classmates or even themselves.Undoubtedly, If we thought about it long and hard enough,We could figure it out.
I'm sure it has a great deal to do with...

Self-respect has never left. The problem is some people only respect themselves and don't care at all about others. If those parents had respect for their children, they'd teach them the good manners needed to succeed in the world. They'd also teach their kids better than to get in a situation that may lead to statutory rape. Don't really know where you're going with the "sluttiest dresses". Fashion is a matter of opinion (unless you're Amish or Muslim). I think it's hella slutty to have one's pants around the knees and displaying the underwear. Fashion is definitely a matter of opinion.

It's a byproduct of being a spoiled rich society, which we are. In America today capitalism has been promoted to the point where all anyone thinks about is getting rich and looking out for #1. Free markets are great and I wouldn't want to get rid of capitalism, but without an acknowledgment by society at large of the impact of TV and marketing on our culture, you won't see improvement in the manners of our youth.
A few years ago I was getting on a subway when a teenage girl literally pushed aside and old woman to get a good seat. In front of all the passengers I told her what she did was wrong and she better never do it again. Her response was "You don't know me, you can't talk to me that way." I responded by laughing and saying that I didn't have to know her to know what she did was wrong. You should have seen the look on her face.
Young people today think that they can do whatever they want to whomever they want because television - both the shows AND the marketing tell them that's the way it is.
The other problem is that parents can't do the job they need to do if they have to work two jobs to make ends meet.

The primary teacher of values in our culture used to be the family. A child's behavior is learned and modeled after the expectations of the significant people in the child's life. When you no longer have intact households, a family dinnertime, or clear-cut societal values, the next generation will never acquire culture. Kids are getting their culture from violent movies, even more violent video games and parents who try to instill good old fashioned values in their kids are struggling against the tide. No wonder Homeschooling is on the rise.
Here are a few thoughts from a book I wouldn't dare teach without in 2007!
Americans are starved for attention:
The average child receives just 12 min. of attention from his or her parents each day.
The average parent watches five to six hours of television each day.
The number one problem reported by high school students is loneliness.
Loneliness is the number one problem of the elderly, many are afraid to venture out of their homes/apartments.
When the Carnegie Foundation surveyed 22,000 teachers:
90 % said that a lack of parental support was a problem at their schools.
69 % stated that poor health was a problem for their students.
100 % described their students as "emotionally needy and starved for attention and affection."

My seven year old grandson held the door open for a pastor at a wedding recently and the pastor walked right through the doorway and never even acknowledged the little boy holding the door for him. Heres an example of a little boy showing good manners and an adult showing very poor manners. What a terrible example that pastor was in this situation and in this day and age.

Society has gone to crap and I blame it partly on bad parenting. I was raised to be a decent person, to have manners and respect, patience and tolerance. Unfortunately many people do not place importance on these basic things and we see it every day in the way kids are acting. When I was growing up I had a certain amount of fear when it came to disobeying my parents and there seems to be little of that now.

Kids are being raised in daycare by other children. At West Point Cadettes get a pass on Honor Code violations in their plebe year because the Administration has realized that they don't understand the concept of honor. This is where we stand in 2007.

All these things died out in the late 1980's.
People today practice Selfishness with every breath they take.
Television advertisements in the 1990's sounded boringly repetitive: "Get the loan YOU DESERVE" ... "Get the savings YOU DESERVE" ... People have been force-fed a diet of Self Esteem, Conceit, and Ego --- and this is the result.
Political Correctness and Affirmative Action threw out merit and the fruits of hard work; and replaced them with getting into a position because of what you are, not what you have worked hard to achieve.
Cinema and "Music" brought out the aggressive, and the vulgar as being "cool" ... Violence and horror were the great subjects of movies throughout the 1980's.
"Rap" music is all about "Me", "Looking out for Number One". Greed and power is all that people today are concerned with.
The "law" protects the criminal, while the victim is put on trial for (more or less) being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Vicious, evil people are excused as "victims of abuse" "victims of poor neighbourhoods" victims of society" etc. etc. ... which is a degrading insult to people who grew up in poverty or war fifty years ago, and applied themselves as adults to become respectable, responsible human beings.
How much lower society can go, is impossible to say.
Please refer to the first few paragraphs of the Appendix "Cinema" at www.theforgottenbible.org, if it might be of interest to you.
Sincerely,
Philip Livingstone

You have just raised the standard of questions I have been seeing tonight. You will reap what you sow, and you sound like a man that will be planting good seeds. You are a man after my own heart. Teach your children as you have been taught, and things will go well for you.
