This distance harks back to the old measurement of 1760 yards in a mile and 440 yards being one quarter of a mile i.e. 1760 divided by 4. In order to run a mile you ran around the track 4 times.
In a 440 track competitors have to navigate the whole circumference of the track a total of 440 yards or 1320 feet. Nowadays most tracks run in meters or 39.3 inches so the normal track is 400 meters
