I find Jim Carrey to be a better dramatic actor than comedic actor. His comedy is just slapstick and annoying, most of the time, not at all inspired.
His dramatic acting isn't that great either but at least it's a bit better.
Either way, it's not very fair to suggest that actors avoid stretching themselves. Actors do the best when they can experiment with new roles and push their limits. They learn more, they enjoy their work more, and they avoid being typecast.

Within every comedic actor is an inherent need to prove his mettle as a serious protagonist. From Eddie Murphy to Carrey, and others before them, they like to take up the challenge to do something other than making people laugh. Robin Williams, Peter Sellers are other great examples.
Lastly, if you see an actor doing the same thing repetitively, you will soon tire of their antics/performance and drop them like a hot potato.

Don't take this the wrong way. I am not having a go at you or making a personal attack...
Why should he stick with - as you said - bringing so much laughter to people?
Shouldn't we all be allowed to explore other possibilities and expand out skills and ability and knowledge and experience?
Jim Carrey probably wants to learn new acting skills, try out new roles and NOT be typecasted. He does not have to live his life to you or other people expectation of who or what he should be.
Do YOU stick with one experience in YOUR life? Think about it.

I disagree. I think he does pretty well playing a more dramatic role, and it takes very little effort for me to remove the "Comedian Jim Carrey" from the dramatic characters he plays.

Actually, he's not a bad dramatic actor.
he can definitley play a dramatic character.
if you see in some of his outrageously funny movies, he can actually be serious when he wants to.
plus all actors want to at least try a different type of role.
look at dane cook, hes gonna be in mr. brooks this summer and thats way out of what he normally does.

Actually, I love Jim Carrey as a serious actor, and think he's very talented. I know he's a fantastic comedy actor, but I think that almost comes naturally to him. I think he's great.

Probably because a good many people find his dramatic/not funny movies really good. Like myself.
Plus, if he respects himself, he doesnt care what the audience wants..only what he finds interesting.
