Q: We know that "SCRAM" means to do an emergency shutdown on a reactor. Do we know where the term comes from?

A: When Fermi lit off the first reactor under the University of Chicago's football stadium, he had graduate students on top of the pile with axes ready to cut the ropes that held the graphite rods that moderated the reaction.........hence Safety Control Reactor Ax Men....

So, follow up question: Given the fact that no one had any idea what they were getting into ( Are you kidding me? Kids wiith axes to stop a nuclear meltdown?!?!?!) wern't we all incredibly lucky something Really Bad didn't happen during the Manhatten Project?
