The Amazons!

The tribe of women invaded Athens after Theseus kidnapped their queen Hippolyte. His battle with them was extremely popular in ancient Athenian art, and the Athenians had a number of shrines which commemorated the battle.

Hippolyte's sister Penthesileia later led a small band to help Troy after the death of Hector in the Trojan War.

(The historical Persians, of course, also sacked Athens and set fire to the Acropolis, but that is historical not myth!)

I will have a look in my library later and see if I can elaborate..
