You might get some pinging, but it won't blow it up

Why? The gas mileage will go down and you will loose performance. I would bet with the drop in MPG what your saving at the pump will be eaten up and then some. My son has a V6 Mercury Mystique it calls for 87 and I put in 91 because it actually gets much better gas mileage with it and in the long run costs me less per mile. I calculated that the price difference between even 89 and 91 would have to be 1.25 a gallon for 89 to be cheaper. Do your own test. I bet you will find the same thing.

go by your owner's manual. if the manual says use premium gas, like 91 octane or more, use that. 87 octane is not 'clean' enough for a car that uses premium gas. 87 can produce build-ups of harmful deposits that damage engine parts, fuel systems, gaskets, etc. it sucks paying $3.50+ for premium...you may get away with 87 octane if you add octane boosters (a liquid you can get at auto stores). See if it would be cheaper to get 87 gas with octane boost or just buy premium. don't mess with you car...much more expensive to buy a new car than pay the extra $5 for a tank of premium gasoline.

Not recommended.

If a car is designed to run on 91, its compression ratio is higher than a slug designed to run on 87.

Over the long term you'll find out what parts don't like the lower octane. Probably pistons & valves.

AHAH. Well the answer your going to have a chose is do you want to save on gas for a while or pay someone to rebuild your engine for you since you will do engine damage.

No! Thats what the manufacturer recommends, using a lower octane rating will be more difficult to burn, you will wear out your engine faster, sparkplugs etc. Use what is recommended,. the amount your saving now, is negligable to the amount you will spend if your car breaks down.
