People can 'sniff' data from public wireless. The password that you enter on web mail with 'http' address is easily capture while https will encrypt the data all the way to mail server. Try to use https to login email where possible e.g. use https://www.gmail.com instead of http://www.gmail.com.

Turn firewall on. All windows XP service pack 2 and later has it.

Hi,

Well.. a public network is never the safest, be it a wired network or wireless. Another user on the network, or an administrator can possibly violate your privacy.

But that shouldn't stop you from checking emails, browsing or whatever you do on a daily basis. Just ensure that you DO NOT log into your bank account or make credit card payments on a public network. Better to be safe then sorry!

Yes it is safe if you use precautions . Make sure that have up to date virus protection and use common sense like don't give out your password and be sure of the network you are trying to access. Some people set up fake networks so that they can access your computer. Turn off automatic connection to available networks and file sharing
