The Most Annoying Question I’ve Ever Heard and Asked Too

To know the answer, you should know the difference between “k” and “K”.

In the International System of Units (SI), lowercase “k” is a prefix implying “times 1000”.

For example: km (kilometers) or kg (kilograms)

In finance, uppercase “K” is often used as a suffix implying “times 1000”.

For example: $258K.

And this simply means that uppercase K=1000

However, K usually means “times 1024” in computing, as most of the things to do with computer hardware are in the multiples of 2.

For example, 1 Kb of memory is 1,024 bytes.

Traditionally, M (for Mille), the French word for thousand, is used to indicate thousands, but since the advent of computers, K is becoming more and more common.

You're right when you say that k means thousand. The letter k is put after the number to denote 'kilo', which usually means thousand e.g 'kilometer (one thousand meters), 'kilowatt' (one thousand watts), and so on.

kilo- (symbol: k) is a prefix in the SI and other systems of units denoting 10^3 or 1,000. For example:

* one kilogram is 1,000 grams
* one kilometre is 1,000 metres
* one kilowatt is 1,000 watts
* one kilojoule is 1,000 joules

It comes from the Greek χίλιοι ("khilioi"), meaning thousand.
