Depends on what factors are important to you. I live in Eugene, Oregon. It's a college town, so there are a lot of opportunities to further your education, and a lot of young people. It's also very liberal. Lots of old hippies. The job market is not that great, cuz of all the grads and there's a lot of mill work/physical labor.
Portland is the largest city in Oregon, lots of recreational stuff nearby, more jobs, more people, more traffic. And the only Cheesecake Factory in Oregon. :)
If I were to move anywhere in the state (and I'm a native), I'd head for Bend/Redmond/Prineville area. Its growing alot, more jobs being created, new housing. Plus, there's so much to do outside there - skiing, hiking, horses, rock climbing. It's on the east side of the mountains so there's less rain, less pollen for allergies, more sun, warmer temps, and SNOW in the winter! As its a resort type area, property values are high though, so if owning a home is really important to you, it would be tough.

THis may seem like a stupid question or response to where can a person who is single actually move to and live in these United States and feel a bit alive and more happier? I live up north and born outside Boston. But, I'm not white, nor Irish, and I'm not Italian, although I could pass for an Italian person. Very nice people; with strong and sound values and traditions I surely admire. But, I'm a mixed race educated woman who can't even get a job working at Burger King. Why? Not sure if its my baby boomer age range, or because I don't "fit into" the tight knit groups that exist just about all over. If you don't work, you wind down into a cycle of poverty, no work possibilities, your friends and family members don't even want to visit anymore. This isn't what I was told about getting educated, or that I could live just about anywhere I wanted to. No---I fear for some places that hate me just because of my skin color; or because I'm not young enough, or sexy enough, or have a great big white smile like most people today who are lucky to afford health care benefits. People just use people where I am when it comes to being the minority. This isn't right is it? What happened to treating our Christian brothers and sisters with kindness, with compassion and love and giving every citizen in this great nation good opportunities. New Bedford Massachusetts use to be a wonderful place to raise kids and have a nice family; today---it houses more poor people, helps more immigrants from third world countries like Panama or other Hispanic-speaking countries. We see many whites going places; while there are less and less and less brown or black skinned females in any work place that has a predominately all white hiring tradition. I would never have believed my life could take such a down turn and a place where I don't know who I am anymore in this world of unfair hiring practices; predominate individual groups in power for generations to follow; and people still shouting that we are all brothers and sisters under the eyes of God. I don't believe in much of anything anymore---most of what I have experienced today is just a big lie and nothing more.

from what I know and have heard California is a way too expensive place to live. I'd opt for any larger town in Oregon.

I live in Cali and its too damn expensive. Family and job is keeping me here. If you have a good qual then you will be okay in any city here. San Diego is really nice. Close to LA and Vegas. Good luck.
