I was wondering how all of those "stupid" people were getting 4 miles. And THEN, I re-read the question.
Do not guess what the question is? Read the actual question.
The correct answer is 4 miles.

Is this a 4th grade Math?
Is this a "trick" question for youngster?
If you are serious, the problem is wrong to start with.
It should read, how far did Jack travel if they are 5 miles apart.
Obviously and clearly, Johnny already traveled 4 miles.
This is the answer if this is a "trick" question.
Anyway, are you already learning Pythagorean Theorem?
Consequently, a right triangle is formed from their starting point.
Johnny's distance forms a leg of the triangle.
Jack's distance forms the base of the triangle.
The distance between them becomes the hypotenuse of the triangle.
(Note: This is a closed polygon as the basis)
Let a = Johnny's distance
Let b = Jack's distance
Let c = the distance between them
Using Pythagorean Theorem:
(In any given right triangle the squares of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the base and the leg).
In algebraic form:
c^2 = a^2 + b^2 (Equation 1)
Given:
a = 4 miles
c = 5 miles
Find:
b = ? miles
Solution:
From (Equation 1);
b^2 = c^2 - a^2 (By transposing a^2 to the right side---change the sign)
Substituting the known values;
b^2 = (5)(5) - (4)(4)
b^2 = 25 - 16
b^2 = 9
b = 3 miles (Answer) ---This is the square root of 9.
Remark:
This is a 3,4,5 right triangle.

I am glad to be of help.
Good Luck!

assuming they start from the same point they their paths will form a right angle triangle of height y and length x with a hypotenuse h. From the problem we know y=4 and h=5 and want to find x. We also know that for a right angle triangle

a^2 + b^2 = c^2 thus....
4^2 + x^2 = 5^2
x^2 = 9
x = 3 (or x=-3) depends which way you go! Since Jack headed east (not west - which would be x=3) x= -3 so we say 3 miles east.

They said that Johny travelled 4 miles. It doesn't matter how far apart they are.

The answer is 4 miles.

this would create a right triangle with one side 4 and the hypotenuse 5. This is a special triangle 3-4-5. Using the Pythagorean theorem you can get the 3rd side.

a^2 + b^2 = c^2
4^2 + b^2 = 5^2
16 + b^2 = 25
-16 = -16
-------------------
b^2 = 9
b = 3

NOTE: ^2 means squared

assuming they both started at the same point

a basic 3-4-5 triangle

they are 5 miles a part (hypoteneus) and one leg is 4 miles -

the other leg is three

3 squared + 4 squared = 5 squared
