I think it's a personal decision. The age at which someone is accepted at an adult hospital (assuming there's a children's hospital near you) is usually 14-16. But some children might want to make the change about the time they go through puberty. I'd leave it up to them, though, because they might be more comfortable having a doctor they know well seeing them through it.

There are primary care doctors who practice Adolescent Medicine, dealing with kids from puberty until adulthood. They are not too common, but they are out there. In any case, sometime in the teens may be the appropriate point to discuss with the parents' family doctor and the kid's pediatrician about making the switch.

pediatricians often see their patients until it is time to go away for college -most offices love to see their patients grow up and say goodbye! while the pediatrician is the specialist for pediatric patients (ages 0-18), it should be the choice of the parent and child as to when it is time to move to a family doctor or gynecologist.

Most pediatricians see their patients up to 18 years old, but kids can also go to a family practitioner if they feel more comfortable going to the doctor that their parents go to.

Up to 18 but it is the individuals choice, most stop at 16 or in females cases when they start seeing the gyno. It's up to the young man/woman what they feel comfortable with.

I knew someone who was 28 and still saw his pediatrician as his doctor. My comment was, I guess your doctor didn't want to lose a patient and aren't you tired of reading Highlights magazine?
