Dude I feel so bad for young people that listen to the radio, or worse, MTV these days. I'm 33 but I remember being young and not liking the radio or some MTV crap. I admit I am guilty of listening to Quiet Riot and Twisted Sister in the 80's but while most kids were listening to catchy new wave like Bow Wow Wow and Wang Chung, I was sneaking my parents old vinyl records in my room. Stuff like Simon & Garfunkel, Santana, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Boston, Barry White, etc... I found it more enjoyable and challenging than all the crap that was playing on the radio back then. I would rather hear "Sounds Of Silence" instead of "I Want Candy" anyday since then. Record companies are aiming at kids, and they have been for a while now. They're getting pickier and pickier. They don't want artists over a certain age, they got to look good. They're really insulting young people selling them s#hit music. The best musicians ever weren't picture perfect, but people still grew their hair and their sideburns and beards because they were beautiful to our ears, but I tell you, but todays standards, some of these guys in the 70's were butt ugly. About why kids hate Classic Rock, all I could say it's a stage. I never thought I would like Big Band Jazz. It was my grandfather's music. But still I played Jazz Band in school and learned more about music than Eddie Van Halen could've taught me about guitar.

I think that kids will listen the music that they hear the people that they look up to listen to the most. I am also not sure who you are considering a kid. I am a teenager and there is nothing more that I despise in music than the music that is released today. I feel that I listen to a lot of the classics because when I got into music, I discovered most of my music taste on my own. I never tried to force myself in liking a certain song in order to appease others and the only songs that I listened to were the ones that I liked right off the bat, which were almost always classic rock songs. If any of the modern music was in there in the beginning, I have now eliminated all of it out of my music libraries since I found out that this music was only catchy. Just to note here, I don't like the classics that are catchy either, like Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, or some of the Beatles. Now, I will only listen to about 20 songs that were made by bands formed after the 90's. However, if I don't qualify as a kid, I have pounded my musical taste into my brother's head since he will listen to most of the things that I listen to. Also, he is a pretty popular kid in his school and has already mentioned some of the influence that he has had on his friends music preferences.
Another thing that I would like to add is that I have found a small correlation between intelligence and musical taste. Up until this year, I went to a public school with a large variety of kids, and a large majority listened to the crap that is put out today. However, I go to a school this year that is designed for smarter people and most of them seem to listen to classic rock. It may be that these people do this because they form their own opinions and are not very dependant on others for their opinions. Either way, the trend for kids listening to classic rock compared to modern rock follows the trends of kids having a larger dependancy on others for opinions.

Not all kids hate classic rock. I happen to listen to a lot of classic rock and have my whole life. And a lot of people I know do. Besides I don't think any band is better then another they all just different. Its all a matter of taste and opinion. It's is true that some kids are closed minded when it comes to older music. But goes the other way as well. older people tend to be closed minded to new music.
Maybe if you gave a couple of the newer bands a chance you might like then. I had my mother who is a huge classic rock fan listen to to Audioslave and she loves them. They have kind of a classic rock feel to them. You should give them a listen sometime.

I'm weird and I love both...well, not specifically Fall Out Boy, I have my own preferences. But my playlist switches between the classics- AC/DC, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen, REM, The Beatles, Rolling Stones and more, to my favorite current music- The Killers, Panic! At the Disco, Incubus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Muse, Oasis and The Academy Is...- among other things. Variety is the best thing to me. Some days I feel more like the older music, some days newer, but usually I just like a nice mix. Of course, I like musicals too, so I can't really expect everyone to have an encompassing taste. But kids should definately give older music a chance if they haven't...however, if they do honestly like new music more, I say leave them to it, however disappointing. Check out what new music you do like though...it's not all the same, there's bound to be something you like.

HA! I listen to all sorts of rock music. Yes, I am a Fall Out Boy fan. But love Pink Floyd to death. <3 Older music has inspired ALL musicians at one point or another. Their probably just kids who think their favorite band is the best. Everyone is like that though. :)

I don't get it either. I think some of them think of it as "old fogey music" though you look at bands like Led Zep, Alice Cooper, Nugent, AC/DC, Priest, etc. Those are hard hitting bands that set the basis for today's rock. They need to have more exposure plus classic rock radio needs to stop playing the same tired songs over and over again.

My teenage son loves classic rock. He prefers it to the newer stuff today. He even likes Buddy Holly, Elvis and a lot of the 60's british bands as well. He has seen Kiss, Aerosmith, Stones and many other classics in concert. He doesn't care to see the newer bands. I think it may have something to do with the amount of exposure to it.

Classic Rock haters are shrinking in number--trust me: I've seen the major record label sales stats for 2005-2006...and they speak VOLUMES, that indicate "retro" Classic Rock is making a comeback--and up and comming bands better take note of this.
The kids today who get their "rock education", listening to bands dating back 20 or so years ago are going to be the ones on the fast track to rock music mega-superstardom.
As for the clueless who don't know who Pink Floyd, Foreigner or Heart are...pity them for their ignorance.

There is something authentic, rugged, and genuine about classic rock music... it's like a nice, perfect worn out pair of jeans with holes in it. But all of the music nowadays is auto-tuned to perfection, with computerized beats... it's too clean, it lacks passion, it lacks soul.. it's like a brand new pair of uncomfortable blue jeans.
