Name Of Our Solar System

The Solar System.

The solar system was named long before we knew that other solar systems existed. Just like the Sun is not the only Sun in the universe but we still call it the Sun.

At a time when people believed the system to be Earth-centric, what they referred to as the "solar system" could have possibly been translated to the "terran system". Technically, the Terran System consists of the first four terrestrial planets on account of the "terrain" they feature. It stems from Latin: terra - meaning Earth. In today s world, we know that our system revolves around the Sun; therefore referring to the solar system as the Sol System is correct, since Sol is Latin for Sun, and Sun means Solar. However, that would mean all solar systems are referred to as the Sol System, so now you have to ask yourself: How should we name the solar systems? For ours, I d go back to using terra. Since Earth seems to be the only inhabited planet in the system, and if we inhabit others in the system, it will be the "mother" planet of the system. Following that logic, calling it the Terran System is still correct. As for other systems, I believe they would name them after the first discovered planet, or whichever planet seems more dominant, or whatever. Example: The Gliese System.

The word Sun was created in all languages to describe our sun - meaning that, essentially the name of Our Sun is in fact just, "Sun." Just like the words mizu, agua, wasser and such all have exactly the same meaning - water. Remember, when you're dealing with a universal concept, a language's word for something is just its name.

So when it was realized that there were planets orbiting out sun, it became known as our Solar System. Realizing that there were other suns in the sky and that they had groups of planets orbiting them, each such cluster became known as a '__________ Solar system'. Such as the 'Alpha Centauri Solar System,' etc.

It is kind of an abstract concept and I'm not certain I explained it well, but I hope this helps.

We go by the normal convention of calling a star system by the star's name. Sun is called "Sol" in Latin, and so we call our planetary system as Solar system. systems around other stars are being searched and are loosely called as exosolar or extrasolar systems. Recently 3 planets have been discovered around the star Upsilon Adromedae. Once this system is fully discovered, we may have a name for this exosolar planetary system.

Actually the name of our solar system is sol. Sol is the name of our sun and hence the name SOLar system. So depending on how you look at it the name of our system is either Sol or Solar.

Terron is very Earth-centric and very sci-fi. If you can get people to go along, great. But there is no official name for our solar system (I've sometimes seen it called the Sol System, which isn't very unique).

Our solar system doesn't have a name. We just decided to name every other one but ours. I guess its official name could be 'The Solar System'
