You could start by buying yourself a set.
In my experience toyshop sets in cardboard boxes will lose men and dice very easily and you are better off buying a set where the folding board is the box and has a stout pair of clasps to keep it together and there are sculpted recesses in the box so you can see at a glance if anything is missing before you close the board/box for the day.
Then you need a copy of the rules. Most good quality sets will enclose a copy of the rules, This avoids arguments.
And you need an opponent. There is plenty of software available for you to play against if you live at the North Pole and the other Eskimos don't play the game.
And three pieces of advice.
(1) Learning how to use the doubling cube is essential if you are to get the maximum out of the positions you get from the fall of the dice.
(2) Try not to leave too many single men exposed too often. It is not much fun sitting on the bar waiting to get in.
(3) Try and build a wall of men on several successive points, making it hader for your opponent to leapfrog over the wall and run for safety.
Good luck

You could join a club. I'm not much help here as I live abroad, but it's better to play face to face with somebody, rather than online or with a software program.
You should start by playing purely for pleasure and NOT for money as you will need time to learn the rules tactics and so on. After that it's up to you.
I started to play two years ago and now I'm hooked, as it's a great game, faster and more exhilarating than chess or draughts.
As per equipment, it's important to buy a standard size Backgammon set and not a mini travellers size one. This is because it will last longer and the pieces will be easier to move. Even if it costs more it will be money well spent in the long run.
Checkout www.gammoned.com for info, rules, clubs etc.
Better still enter Backgammon onto Google and check out some of the main sites.

I learned how to play backgammon online. I played at netgammon.com. If you play the computer as an opponent, I don't believe you have to pay anything. It has a realistic set up, and you'll learn the moves and set up after playing for awhile.
It is much more fun to play with a live person, sitting at a table with an actual set.
There are many inexpensive sets, however, one with a case is nice to invest in, if you find you like it.
Is a fun game, and not difficult to learn the basics.
Good luck!

you can find a free download of GNU Backgammon here: http://j.mp/1pUE3k7
Finally the full version is avaiable!
GNU Backgammon is a version of the popular board game, which you can play directly on your computer. Several different games can be played against the computer, which has a powerful intelligence engine.
For me, it's the best game ever.

This is not, yet, an answerable question. Try explaining, for instance:
