There are a lot of misinformed answerers here.
Here are some facts:
1) There is not absolutely conclusive proof that human activities are the cause of global warming, although there is a near-consensus in the scientific community that it is. The use of fossil fuels has other serious disadvantages, however, and need to be replaced anyway.
2) The largest source of man-made carbon dioxide is automobiles, followed by electricity production. Aircraft are not even close.
3) There are natural sources of carbon-dioxide, like volcanoes, but the output from these is much smaller than originally estimated and does not equal man-made production.
4) The balance of sloar wind and cosmic rays probably does have an impact on the earth's temperature, but this is not known for certain, and it does not negate the possibility of man-made causes.
5) We are emerging from an ice-age, but that does not mean that man-made carbon dioxide isn't contributing to global warming.
6) Carbon credits, which is a sum of money that some people pay to have trees planted and such to offset the pollution caused by their travel, are unreliable. There is no guarantee that your money will be used for this puropse or that it will offset pollution.
7) Carbon-dioxide is not the only man-made greenhouse gas
8) There is a correlation between carbon-dioxide in the atmosphere and the earth's temperature, but it is not known if CO2 causes warming, or if warming causes CO2 or if they may cause each other at different times.
9) The United States is by far the largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world (more than every other country combined).
10) Solar power, wind power and electric cars ARE practical alternatives, and would be affordable if consumer demand allowed them to be mass produced.
Wot it all adds up to is this: Plant lots of trees, encourage consumer support for solar and wind power and electric cars (especially in the United States), use the energy savings to shut down the most polluting power plants and replace the remaining fossil fuel burning plants with nuclear power, and you may just see an effect on global warming.
It may not eliminate it, it may not slow it down at all, but even if it has no effect, it means less pollution, less dependance on public power and less dependance on foreign oil.
If it doesn't work, then it wasn't us and there's nothing we could have done. If it does work, hooray!
Either way, we will soon enter a period of low solar activity, which could have a cooling effect on the earth, so reducing pollution now may allow some of the damage to be repaired during that time.

The biggest single cause of global warming is the burning of aviation fuel. If people don't stop flying we'll have to take the consequences. Its been suggested that a tax should be put on air travel but that would not be fair because only the rich could avail of it then. Maybe if everyone was limited to one trip per year? Something will have to happen, though, because the earth has had enough and see how she fights back! Scary.
Edit: Sgt G: We know about the natural phenomena and the earth is just about able for that. Its the man made pollution that is hurrying the process along and not giving her enough time to adapt.

Passive technics to reduce global warming are too late to make any impact on the current climatic trend. So the only real way to reduce global warming are the active solutions, which are way to costly and required a complete reformat of the way we live... Things that will NEVER occur. Also it seems likely that our own planet is triggering part of the climatic shift, as it turns out that we could be inside a natural climatic cycle...
Also I have said in another answer, our current global warming, should become a global cooling in the next few decades, therefore some scientists are already taking reserves and call the climatic shift, a climate changes... As we are not really sure anymore that the warming will not trigger a cooling period soon after...

Electric cars should definitely be produced. It's not a technological problem; there IS no problem! The range easily exceeds sixty miles per charge and can be greatly improved. I saw a documentary on TV that convinced me that electric vehicles are feasible and low-polluting (actually zero-polluting, but emissions are produced by the generation of power). I'm far from a conspiracy theorist, but it's clear to me that electric vehicle production is blocked by car companies and oil companies in favor of what they view as maximum profit. And it's a shame.
They're not really all that expensive, and the price would go way down if they were mass produced, but car companies resist.

i'm offering my answer: it is been stated that the temperature in the worldwide is getting warmer. In Al Gore’s; "Inconvenient reality," I heard that a footnote pronounced; “The solar is getting warmer” (I even have not seen the documentary or study something on his findings). In DVM’s; "Inconvenient fact," I heard that the temperature on Mars is getting warmer. At this element in time, i comprehend of no human beings residing on Mars. Why is the temperature on Mars getting warmer? The solar is getting warmer. How can we end worldwide Warming? remember; I’m not saying that the solar is the only reason of “worldwide Warming,” we've all polluted the Earth. lowering pollutants and preserving power could desire to be a purpose of all of us. My answer for worldwide Warming: NASA sends a “solar defend” with memory steel into area. while deployed, the memory steel will stretch the defend right into a extensive circle or a sq.. the area shuttle’s astronauts will placed the defend into orbit at a area which will block a number of the solar’s rays over a niche on the sea. this could shrink the solar’s rays that hit the Earth. subsequently, lowering the floor and ocean temperatures. with the aid of shrink in ocean temperature, the variety of hurricanes could desire to cut back. confident, there are greater advantages. the size, variety of shields, and places could desire to be desperate. returned, all of us could desire to cut back pollutants and defend on power. DVM could, 2007 (confident, this answer is being sent to decision makers)

Human contribution to global climate change is minuscule, at most. It is best for the global community to not mess with Mother Nature. She's done a marvelous job of keeping us alive.
We have the greatest form of energy-saving transportation ever invented: our feet. Walk more. Use a bicycle. Buy a sub-compact car.
Stockpile carbonated drinks. The manufacturers of those beverages pull carbon dioxide out of the air and store it in huge containers. Fill your garage and basement with them.
Remember CFC's? They were the culprits that got Freon banned. Now "science" has figured out that CFC's are so heavy they can't get to the ozone layer by themselves.
The global warming scare is just one more way that "science" is leading us down the garden path to a not-so-pleasant screwing in order to fill their pockets.
Don't forget; the original global warming scare was the result of faulty science and unscrupulous manipulation of data in order for a lettered, tenured "scientist" to get federal money.

The Global Warming hype will pass. Actually, to be scientifically accurate we need to rename it, "We are coming out of an Ice Age."
Scientific evidence found in studies at the polar ice caps have revealed much more in depth information that what scientists have speculated in laboratories. Core samples of ice which can let scientists accurately determine climate and track how it has changed, have all led them to come to the same conclusion: The earth is getting warmer at a gradual, steady rate and this has been occurring for about the last 10,000 years. It has NOTHING to do with humans or cars, etc.
Do not get suckered into political hype. I know you probably watched the movie, but in reality Al Gore IS NOT a scientist. He is a career politician. Him and others are capitalizing on this phenomenon to push political agendas.
Please don't be a sucker. Do some research and learn the truth. When Al Gore sells a few of his LARGE homes
and moves into an eco-friendly house and quits flying EVERYWHERE on private jets and travelling in SUV's ONLY THEN can he preach to me.
Think of all of the volcanoes we have and how much sulfur dioxide and other TONS pollutants they spew into the atmosphere. Think of how much oil leaks into the ocean naturally through undersea vents each day; Hundreds of Thousands of Gallons. Think of all of the carbon dioxide and methane thrown into the atmosphere each day by swamps and bogs and other area where these NATURAL processes occur.

It's too late. The Americans are resisting any attempt to make them clean up their act and they are the world's biggest polluters and users of fossil fuel. China and India will follow their example and what the rest of us do will not compensate for that.

It is my view that global warming is caused by the overheating of the earth's surface. Not by CO2. We are told that the sea is warming up. According to experts at an alarming rate. A kettle will boil quicker if heated from the base. I believe that the extraction of oil and its replacement by water is responsible for this.
When oil was extracted from the deserts and other hot areas this heating would have gone un-noticed.
I rest my case.

Great answer Sgt G. I wish people would stop and think for once instead of choosing to believe the hype put out by self seeking politicians. The proponents of global warming choose only to use so called facts to fit their ideas, any opposing voice is immediately shouted down. Which is why i have 4 bad answer marks.
