The babblings of astrology are often confused with those of religion.

As a matter of fact:
a) the most primitive Sumerian gods, like Enlil, were at first associated to the sky itself and to planets
b) However, for most civilisations to rise, a sort of religious system based on irrationality and on a slave cast, exploited by a selected amount of noble invididuals, had to be invented
c) Besides, for to be developed, books to be written and history to be made, civilisation had to appear first.

That perhaps explains why astrology, the church and popular ignorance seem to be are all inter-connected.

Excerpt of history:
----------------------------
"Sumerian beliefs were... the inspiration for much of later Mesopotamian mythology, religion, and astrology"

The roots of astrology however seem to have grown independently in Egypt, China and with Sumerians. The most ancient of chinese cliff carvings (6,000-5,000BC) have been discovered "featuring 8,453 individual characters such as the sun, moon, stars, gods and scenes of hunting or grazing."

At the other end of the Earth, the Mayans lived and developed their own cosmogony and astrologiy system during that same time. They later invented a sort of sport based on astrology.
"This game had a cosmic essence, related to the movement of the sun and the universe[cite this quote]; this movement was imagined with the aid of the ball, which was made of hardened rubber that was removed from the sap of a fig tree"

Another early astrological system is that of the Egyptians. These guys invented hieroglyphs in the third millenium BC and used them on obelisks.
