This may be of some help to you:
I just answered a similar question elsewhere so I will reprint my answer for you:
I have been using Smart FTP for years now without a problem. It's free and works very well.
You can download it here:
http://www.smartftp.com/
To start, you will need your website's ftp address and password, both of which would have been supplied to you by your webhost. Your ftp address looks like this: ftp.yourdomainname.com. If you don't know them then just call or email your webhost.
Once you load Smart FTP, just type in your ftp address and password.
The next screen that opens will be split, on the left side will be your website files and on the right will be your computer desktop.
It just a matter of dragging whatever files you want to upload from your desktop across to your website. Whenever you do this it will automatically update the previous file.
Notes: Your website's home page is generally called index.html
You upload this file into the public_html folder at your webhost.
So for the very first time, load smart ftp and open your site. Then drag your index.html file over and place it on the public_html folder.
Alternatively you can open your public_html folder first by clicking on it, then drag your index.html file across and place in anywhere.

If you want functionality, databases, logins, searches, uploads and so on, DO NOT use ANY of the above mentionned programs. DO NOT use ANY front end programs. Their problems is that they convert your "ideas" into very bad code, totally unmaintainable. Think of them as translation programs, from english to chinese and vice versa! It takes a long time to learn these programs and, once you know them well, you will realise that they DON'T allow you to do what you want - and that they are always behind as far as new functionality is added to the web... Within the time you will loose learning them, you could have learnt NOTEPAD as editor (2 minutes learning curve?), HTML (20 minutes for the basics), a bit of Javascript (try to avoid), PhP (a few days for the basics), and MySQL (a week or two). You will then be designing PROPER websites, in a professional manner, easy to maintain, easy to upgrade and at the top of the range.
