As long as the baseball players union is strong, there will never be anything fair about baseball. The Yankees will always be the Yankees, and teams like the Indians, Twins, Royals, Blue Jays, Astros, Pirates, etc will only be able to hope to stockpile talent and hope they peak together before their contracts expire... if not try to get as much as possible in trades and try again. Sucks... unless you're a freakin' yankees fan.

Is it fair? No. But it isnt the only team that this happens to. Just look at the old Montreal Expos. They were MLB's best farm system for years producing Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Vlad Guerrro, Tim Raines and Larry Walker and more only to see these future Hall of Famers leave via free agency or trade because they couldnt afford them. If that team had been able to keep its stars they would have won 3 or 4 world series and would still be in Montreal. Hopefully the twins are smart with their money and lock up a few of these guys so they can have a solid core for the future. No team (except the NY's and boston) could afford all thattalent at free agency, butif they keep 2 or 3 they are that much better then the rest of the league.

What about the A's look at them they've lost Tejada, Hernandez, Mulder, Hudson, Zito, Giambi, Dye, etc.... And still look at what they've done with being a small market ball club. I don't think you have to worry too much becuase teams like the Twins and The A's have talent in the minor leagues that can replace those players. They're more then likely not resigning Torii Hunter but I'm pretty sure that Mauer isn't going anywhere neither is Santana, Liriano who's injured one good season doesn't constitute him as a great player yet, and Morneau I'm pretty sure is going to get the money from the Twins.

What # a million Yankees' fan and others ignore is that somewhat undesirable, non-baseball vendors like George Steinbrenner created the money recreation. it somewhat is arbitrary, yet except money variations in baseball, we will proceed to have 12 or so important league communities, some like the Twins, and a set of AA communities like the Royals and Pirates. Steinbrenner basically isn't a baseball guy, and he's made it so as that baseball human beings could desire to sell their little ones to have a great group for a quick whilst. on the vivid area, the Twins are remarkable in how they save arising to compete!

Fair or not--they will have to get over it. Move on. I won't cry for them. I have seen my Indians lose their *** that way for years. Nothing new-now Twins can feel it. Try losing Manny Ramirez in his prime. Twins will never know what it's like to lose a hitter of that caliber and have to replace him with Jody Gerut for two years...
And Mauer's contract doesn't expire--they inked him during last season. Santana's contract doesn't expire in a few years--try after 2008. And Liriano may not command anything-see how he is when he comes back-he has a red flag on him now due to his injury-and he isn't as proven as say, Santana.

Twins owner Carl Pohlad is the richest owner in baseball. He could put up Yankees-class payrolls, pay for the new ballpark, and make tickets free for a decade and still have a few billion left to pass on to his family (he's nearly 90).
He doesn't do that, primarily because he IS a billionaire, and that didn't happen by his being generous.
And he won't be around forever.
Let's see what might happen after him.

The Twins do not have to get rid of these players. They are owned by Carl Pohlad, one of the richest owners in baseball. He just refuses to increase his payroll. He has a choice to make and he chooses to keep his profit margin up and his payroll down. It is all about the money. As long as an owner can make a hefty profit and still win, why keep the expensive players around. It is all about the money. As in the movie "Jerry Maguire" "Just Show Me The Money". In my opinion they are all overpaid, but as long as we the fans continue to go to the games, the players will continue to drive up the salaries. He does have a choice he just chooses to let them find other takers and keep his profit margins high.

they've done it for long enough and been ok, and i think they will continue this process...the key is the excellent scouts, minor league managers, and coaching staff they have in place to not only spot potentially great players at the beginning, but to groom them and make them the best they can be...if they didn't have those people, they would have poor teams year after year because they didn't have a lot of talent or the talent didn't pan out

i think its very fair........unlike Zloar who is bitter towards the yankees for doing what every owner should do, george steinbrenner is willing to spend the money on a player that they want. if these small market teams would stop thinking about profit, they would spend the extra money to keep these players.
