XVID is a relative of the somewhat more popular DIVX codec. Both are often used in Windows AVI files.

In general, you just download the XVID Codec binaries, install it on your PC, and voila, that AVI file will play on your PC (in any media player, including WMP)

To play it on a DVD Player directly your DVD player needs to play MPEG4 / DIVX. If it doesn't you do the standard conversion "how do I convert video to play on DVD player". Search here, it's been discussed thousands of times.

You need to download the following, first of all go to xvid.org and download it. Then you will also need to download a codec called AC3. (look it up on Google for a download location.) Xvid is a public domain version of Divx which is a compressed file format for video images. It doesn't take up as much room as regular video formats. Xvid will integrate with Media Player or Real Player but with Divx you need to download a separate player.
