Okay so, my computer kept freezing so I restored it..but then when I tried going through the set-up pages at the beginning, it kept stopping at the same spot each time..then sometimes my CPU wouldn't turn on at all. So I let my friend check it out and first he thought it was a hardware problem, but today he said it's the restore disc's that's not working properly..so my question is, where could I buy windows XP restore disc's for an emachines computer at?? And about how much are they?

E machines should give you a new restore disk for free. Dell. HP and compaq do. Emacines has a hidden partition with a clean copy of your os and your drivers. Ask emachines what the keystroke combo is. Don't expect good tech support from emachines, they do not require indeppendently certified techs like some other companies do

One other option you should consider.

If you don't have your original restore cd, or your hidden partion on your hard drive no longer has the restore image, you can always re-install XP Home or Pro (whichever version you had) from any other copy of XP.

Now wait, you say. How can I do that? Easy. I've done it many many times for numerous clients of mine. I can't tell you how many of my clients don't keep those original cds that came with the computer.

Ok, this is a more detailed way to recover XP, but it can be done. Here's what you do:

1. Get another copy of Windows XP (make sure you get the right version, Home or Pro). Recover your hard drive's operating system from the cd.
2. When you get to the desktop after it installs (typically takes around 30-45 minutes) start installing the drivers back in place (video, audio, network card, etc. - check your Device Manager and look for "Other Devices"). More than likely you'll need to use another computer to download and burn the drivers either to a cd or copy them to a USB key.
3. Once all drivers are in place, for Win XP, you're going to see a notification that you need to activate Windows. Go ahead and do it, but instead of trying to activate over the phone, select the "Activate Over Telephone" option.
4. Follow the links to change your product key. You'll come to a screen where it wants you to type in the new key. Locate your product key sticker on the side of your computer and enter it in.
5. Now, if you're lucky, it'll activate immediately once you hit that submit button. If not, and you're like me, you'll be asked to call a toll free number and you're given a HUGE installation ID key on your screen. Follow the prompts on the phone (it's automated) and you'll be given a new code to type in to the computer to make it happy. If you have to talk to a human, they'll ask you how many computers you have it on. Be honest. Just say that your computer crashed and you're reinstalling the O/S.

I know it may seem like a lot, but if you can't locate your recovery discs, then this option will work. Trust me. I've done it hundreds of times for my clients.

Good luck!

Howdy, when you say you CPU wouldn't turn on, do you mean that the computer itself when you pressed the power button made no noise? If so then you have a loose connection in your computer on a jumper. I would suggest that to find a windows XP restore cd you should go to your manufacturer's website, chances are you can download the c.d. for free and burn it onto a c.d.
